Northern Tanzania offers an unforgettable experience for birdwatchers, with its rich biodiversity and varied landscapes. This 14-day birding safari takes you through some of the region’s most spectacular birding hotspots, including Lake Victoria, iconic Serengeti plains, Ngorongoro Crater, the scenic Tarangire River, unique Lark Plains, and Arusha National Park.

Traveling between October and May also gives you the chance to observe various migratory species. Alongside exceptional birding, you'll encounter Tanzania’s extraordinary wildlife, ranging from the Big Five to the world-famous wildebeest migration.

This itinerary is great for bird enthusiasts and nature lovers, especially first-time travelers to Tanzania or Africa who want to make the most of their birding opportunities with enjoyable game drives in the northern circuit.

Itinerary

  • Arrive at the airport, where you will be greeted by our staff and sent to your accommodation.

  • We will leave early in the morning with our packed mealsand spend the day exploring Arusha National Park. Our birding adventure will begin at the main entrance gate, followed by a visit to the Ngurdoto Museum, and then we will head to Momela Lakes for lunch. Afterward, we will circle the lakes and, later in the evening, make our way up to the Fig Tree area, offering views of Mount Meru. During our exploration, we will be on the lookout for bird species such as the Kilimanjaro White-eye, Taveta Golden Weaver, Rufous-tailed Weaver, Pangani Longclaw, Hartlaub's Turaco, Swahili Sparrow, and Abbott’s Starling, among others.

  • Today, we will take a flight to Lake Victoria, the largest freshwater lake in Africa, to explore the unique bird species of the Lake Zone. This region is home to several specialties not found in the Serengeti. In the evening, we’ll enjoy a birding session around the lake. Overnight stay in Lamadi, Simiyu.

  • Full day of birding around Speke’s Gulf on Lake Victoria, focusing on Lake Basin specialties. We’ll search for key species such as Blue-headed Coucal, Swamp Flycatcher, Northern Brown-throated Weaver, Slender-billed Weaver, Red-chested Sunbird, and Black-headed Weaver, along with a variety of waders and shorebirds along the lake’s edge.

  • Drive to Western Serengeti via Ndabaka Gate, birding en route to Central Serengeti, night in Central Serengeti.

  • We will spend two full days birdwatching and game viewing in the central and southern Serengeti, focusing on our target species, including the Grey-breasted Spurfowl, Grey-crested Helmetshrike, Usambiro Barbet, Fischer's Lovebird, and Maasai Apalis. Along the way, we may also encounter the iconic "Big Five"—lion, elephant, Cape buffalo, black rhino, and leopard. Depending on the season, there is also a chance to witness the awe-inspiring wildebeest migration, a breathtaking spectacle of nature.

  • Early birding in Central Serengeti, return for lunch, then drive to Ndutu area in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, overnight in Ndutu.

  • Full-day birding and game drive.

  • Drive from Ndutu to Crater floor, spend the rest of the day there, exit Loduare Gate before 6:00 pm, overnight in Karatu

  • Endoro Cave Trail, return for lunch, then drive to Tarangire, arriving late in the evening, and overnight in Tarangire.

  • Half a day in Tarangire, return to the lodge for lunch, then drive to Arusha town, overnight in Arusha.

  • Drive to Engikaret Lark Plains, where we can spot the endemic Beesly's Lark and other dry country specialties, as well as the rich avifauna of the dry lands.

  • We conclude our Tanzanian birdwatching adventure, or you can opt for a 7-day extension to East and West Usambara for endemic species.

Usambara Mountains Extension

  • Early morning drive to South Pare Mountains via Nyumba ya Mungu Dam for the endemic South Pare White Eye, overnight in Same town.

  • Drive to Magamba, West Usambara; bird in the evening; overnight in Lushoto.

  • Full-day birding in Magamba Forest.

  • Drive to Amani Nature Reserve East Usambaras and bird the botanical garden in the evening and at Muheza at night.

  • 2 full-day birding in Amani Nature Reserve.

  • Early morning birding and transfer to the airport for departure.
