Tanzania Introduces Mandatory Inbound Travel Insurance

From 1 October 2026, foreign visitors entering Tanzania are required to have mandatory inbound travel insurance, subject to applicable exemptions and discounts.

Price: USD 44 per visitor
Validity: Up to 92 days

The insurance provider depends on your first point of entry:

You only need one inbound travel insurance policy, based on your first point of entry, subject to the applicable terms and conditions.

Visiting both Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar?

You only need one inbound travel insurance policy, based on your first point of entry, subject to the applicable terms and conditions.

What does the insurance cover?

Protection for covered situations, including medical emergencies, emergency medical evacuation or repatriation, and loss of luggage, subject to the policy terms and conditions.

I already have my own travel insurance. Do I still need to purchase Tanzania’s inbound travel insurance?

We always recommend that travelers keep the travel insurance policy they normally use for their trips. However, Tanzania’s inbound travel insurance is also required. Therefore, travelers should ensure they have both their usual travel insurance and the required Tanzania inbound cover.

I have already purchased ZIC insurance, but my inbound destination is Tanzania Mainland. What should I do?

The current announcement indicates that visitors should purchase the appropriate inbound insurance based on their first point of entry. However, it is still unclear how the rule applies if you have purchased ZIC insurance but your first arrival is in mainland Tanzania, or if you purchase NIC insurance and your first point of entry is Zanzibar. We are waiting for further clarification from the relevant authorities. Once the relevant authorities officially clarify the requirements, we will update this information here.

Entering through Tanzania Mainland, you must obtain Inbound Travel Insurance from the National Insurance Corporation (NIC) if you are entering through an airport, seaport, or land border.

Entering through Zanzibar: Visitors whose first point of entry is Zanzibar must obtain Inbound Travel Insurance from the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC).
